Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Final Assembly

 Westward Ho!

It's week 27, and if you've completed all the blocks A through Z for the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along, you're at your final destination, and ready to assemble your sampler quilt!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Sampler

Along with putting your blocks together and adding borders, you'll also want to prepare your binding so that it's ready to go after your quilt is quilted.

I have my binding ready to go and I'll be using Aurifil Mako 50 weight color 2910 to hand stitch the binding to the back of the quilt, which is a perfect match for my green binding fabric.

I hope you've enjoyed making the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Sampler as much as I did. And I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing it with you! Please feel free to post any photos you may have, either work in progress, or your final quilt on Facebook or Instagram and tag your post #prairiepatchworkquiltalong! I would love to see your work!

The instructions to download and print below will be 7 pages long.

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block Y

 Westward Ho!

It's week 25, and this week we have Block Y in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block(s) Y

Blocks Y are just two lonely half square triangles, and there IS a method to my madness, as you'll find out next week for the final block release of the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along. With those two simple blocks to make, it will be a great week to play catch up if you're a little behind on your other blocks.

Have a great week!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block X

 Westward Ho!

It's week 24, and this week we have Block X in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block(s) X

These blocks will be your border blocks for the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Sampler quilt, so you'll be making quite a few. It's a split flying geese block and although it looks rather complex, it's actually very simple using the instructions you'll find in Prairie Patchwork.

Ma's Sewing Basket

The split flying geese border is the same border used for Ma's Sewing Basket, a small quilt found in Prairie Patchwork. The flying geese "points" are oriented differently, pointing away from the quilt center in Ma's Sewing Basket, versus pointing toward the quilt center in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Sampler, giving it a different look.

If you get behind making your blocks this week, never fear, next week I'll be posting Block Y, which will be a breeze, so you'll be able to catch up!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block(s) T

 Westward Ho!

It's week 20, and this week we have Block T in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block(s) T

Blocks T, in addition to Blocks U through Z, will be your spacer blocks, which will, in turn, be used to construct spacer units. The spacer units will be "fillers" between the previous blocks A through S when assembled into the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along sampler quilt.

I will post the download with the instructions for the final assembly after Blocks A through Z have been posted.

I so look forward to seeing everyone's interpretation of the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Sampler! Please feel free to tag any photos of your progress on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #prairiepatchworkquiltalong!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block S

 Westward Ho!

It's week 19, and this week we have Block S in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along! Block S is a bonus block pattern, which you won't find in Prairie Patchwork, but is very much a part of the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along sampler quilt. Enjoy!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block S

The large appliqued Block S will finish to 15" square. You'll be printing out 10 pages, which will include 4 pages with the full scale applique diagram in sections to fit together. I appliqued my shapes by hand, but feel free to apply your shapes by machine if you prefer.

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block R

 Westward Ho!

It's week 18, and this week we have Block R in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along R

This week you'll be making just one lonely little shoofly block - Block R! Piece of cake!

If you've been participating in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along, you will by now have quite a stack of instructions, if you've printed them out. If you've printed them out, you may also have compiled them into a notebook, like I have.

I have the completed quilt printed onto an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper, and inserted into the clear sleeve on the front of the notebook, which makes a handy quick reference:

If you would like to do the same for your cover, CLICK HERE to download the full size quilt in color to print.

Happy sewing!

Q is for quilt, and we are so close to finishing blocks for the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Sampler. Hint: after this week, there are just 2 more unique what I will call "premier" blocks. Blocks T through Z are blocks for spacer units and the border. And then, the grand finale - assembling the blocks into the sampler!

 Westward Ho!

It's week 16, and this week we have Block P in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block P

I designed the green fabric used in this block to imitate as best I could some of the faded greens you see in many mid-nineteenth century red and green quilts.

Just the one block this week! Happy sewing!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block N

 Westward Ho!

It's week 14, and this week we have Block N in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block N

This block is from the quilt "Pipe Creek" in Prairie Patchwork, and as you know, if you have the book (and hopefully you do!), "Pipe Creek" is wool applique on cotton.

Pipe Creek

And as you can see from Block N, it would work equally well using cotton applique on cotton!

I hope you enjoy making block N, and I will see you again here next week! Happy Applique!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along Block L

 Westward Ho!

It's week 12, and this week we have Block L in the Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along!

Prairie Patchwork Quilt Along - Block(s) L

You'll be making three of these little 4 1/2" finished blocks, which I consider an abbreviated version of the historical Hovering Hawks block, the actual version which looks like this:

Hovering Hawks block

This block design is over 100 years old, back when blocks were frequently given names which described events, places or things which had meaning in the lives of women of the time.

The hawk is ubiquitous in North America, and my Field Guide to the Birds of North America lists 15 different species of the hawk, and even more sub-species. The most common of the hawks is the Red-Tailed Hawk, whose range covers almost all of North America.

Red-tailed Hawk from Birds of America (1827) by John James Audubon (1785 - 1851), etched by Robert Havell (1793 - 1878). Photo courtesy of RawPixel.com

The Red-Tailed Hawk preys on rodents, which makes it a hero in my book!

I hope you'll enjoy making the little Hovering Hawks blocks this week. See you back here next week for Block(s) M!
